Babies are tricky little things. I love my son so much but I’ll be the first to admit that I enjoy him so much more now that he’s walking and talking, however, put me around someone else’s newborn and I c a n n o t get enough. Michelle and Inti welcomed their first child, Azul (love his name!) three weeks ago and he is exactly as yummy as he looks. I love watching new families pad around their homes, catering to their tiny babes and taking note of the details of their new lives: remnants of their recent baby shower, the considered placement of wooden blocks to spell “baby” in the nursery, all those pump and bottle pieces air drying on the kitchen counter (so many pieces). Each still life serves as a time capsule and a reminder that even though the days are long the years are short and I could (almost) be convinced that I’m ready for another baby. Almost. See, I told you babies are tricky.
Here are some of my favorites from my recent newborn and family session with the Gonzalez family in their South Austin home.

Last week I had the honor of photographing Scarlett’s birth at St.David’s North Austin Medical Center. Scarlett was received with so much love and anticipation by her mother Sara, father Chris and big brother Max. Scarlett is the second daughter to Sara and Chris who lost their baby girl, Lucy on Mothers Day 2013 to dilated cardiomyopathy at just 15 months old. Lucy is present in these images and at this event by way of her stuffed bear that Sara sits lovingly on Scarlett in a photo below. After having two natural births and suffering some extreme back pain with Lucy’s birth, Sara opted to have a scheduled epidural. I was so privileged to witness the love between this family as they celebrated the arrival of their daughter and I am humbled to have been asked to document such an intimate day in this family’s life. To read Sara’s account of Scarlett’s birth story and to read several other beautiful and thoughtful stories of motherhood, family and loss, please visit Sara’s blog.

I photographed the stunning Bolin family last week at Zilker Park at sunrise which allowed for many different beautiful lighting situations. It was a chilly start to the day but with some warm thoughts (the kids screamed “pancakes” instead of “cheese” which I loved and inspired post shoot brunch plans) we got some great portraits of this beautiful family. Here are some of my favorites- and as always, all images © Heather Gallagher Photography
